Internet access isn’t just nice to have. Reliable access to the internet is crucial for work, education, and staying connected. But there’s no two ways about it – it’s expensive.

If you’ve been asking yourself how you can stay connected to the internet without breaking the bank, you’ve come to the right place. Read on to learn about free and affordable options to keep you connected without paying through the nose.

Free options

As the old saying goes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch… but sometimes there is such a thing as free internet access.

  • Don’t overlook your local library or community center! Many of these institutions offer free Wi-Fi. Tapping into these resources is an excellent solution if you’re on the go or your home internet is temporarily unavailable. Plus, it’s a wonderful opportunity to switch up your surroundings and perhaps pick up a new book or participate in a community event.
  • Many cafes, restaurants, and other public spaces also provide free Wi-Fi.
  • Some cities even provide free Wi-Fi in designated areas or are planning to implement city-wide internet access.

It’s definitely worth investigating what your local area has to offer.

Low-cost or discounted options

If the free options above aren’t available to you, or if they’re just not what you need, you can check out these other options.

If your household income is below a specific threshold, you may be eligible for these government programs…

Several government assistance programs aim to bridge the digital divide and provide affordable internet access to eligible households.

If you’re not eligible for those programs, some businesses provide affordable internet services to qualifying households

  • For example, the AT&T Access program is designed to bridge the digital divide by offering affordable internet access to low-income households. It provides eligible customers with a low-cost plan, including Wi-Fi equipment and access to thousands of AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide.
  • Or, consider Xfinity’s Internet Essentials program. With plans starting around $9.95 per month, it includes high-speed internet, a Wi-Fi router, and access to various online educational resources to promote digital inclusion and accessibility.
  • These programs are thoughtfully designed to help budget-conscious individuals and families maintain access to the digital world.
