Affordable Care Act–an enhancement of Medicaid

Medicaid was originally designed to give health coverage to protected groups (like pregnant women, children, people with disability) and extremely low-income adults. To improve access for low-income adults, the Affordable Care Act incentivized states to significantly raise the income eligibility threshold for people who didn't fall into those special categories, expanding healthcare access for millions. As of July 2023, 40 states and Washington D.C. have adopted Medicaid expansion.

Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

Families earning too much to qualify for Medicaid may still be eligible for low-cost health coverage for their children (and in some states, pregnant women). Covered services are similar to Medicaid, and routine doctor checkups and dental cleanings are free. If you qualify, coverage can begin immediately, any time of year.
